We go out of our way to offer your SWISS MADE jacket to a reasonable price. Savings in cost for the material are almost impossible – a jacket is only as good as the fabric. With the other parts such as zippers, Velcro fastener cheaper ones can be used but they will break faster than high quality materials. 17% of all our expenses are used for the high-quality materials. But the biggest spending is for the production effort: compared to countries such as Portugal, Eastern Europe, Asia or Africa production in Switzerland is cost intensive. But like this we can guarantee that no employees are exploited and important know-how is kept in Switzerland. To keep our production cost as low as possible we, our production team in Widnau and athletes are steadily working on optimising our designs. This way we get maximal performance with a cost-effective production. An example for this the unique ROTAUF two in one armpit vent with pocket-function. Nevertheless, we invest a third of the sales price into production. After withdrawal of our storage respectively pre-order discount, provisions and shipment, about 15% remains for development, customer service and everything else. Thanks to our efficient cost structure we pull through. This allows us to pursue this path of radically SWISS MADE clothing further.
The Tour Jacket gets 23 out 50 possible points. For the assessment of the environmental sustainability, three issues are paramount:
1. No Harmful Chemicals (10/30)
Already since 2013 our fabrics are completely PFC-free and produced in compliance with the Bluesign-guidelines. But that’s not enough for us. 2016 we partnered up with the Greenpeace DETOX campaign and therefore renounce over 430 additional harmful chemicals. All our fabrics are tested by an independent laboratory associated with Greenpeace. The last test run of the black fabric only detected 11 out of the 430 checked chemicals. Since we rate our products strictly, the detected chemicals lead to a fierce deduction from the sustainability score. Having said this, the result is still excellent compared to other jackets on the market.
2. Closed Loop (3/10)
To reduce the burden of waste on the planet and in the environment, the material from our clothes can be reintroduced in the production cycle. Therefore, the material from our Tour Jacket is completely recyclable. At the moment it is not yet possible to produce the fabric from recycled material - but we are working on it.
The production and the transport of the 3-layer fabric causes a substantial amount of CO2-emission. Our supplier Sympatex sets great value in using only ultra-low CO2-emitting raw materials and reducing transportations to a minimum. Hence the fabric is woven, dyed and glued in the same city. To be 100% CO2-neutral we compensate the emitted CO2 in collaboration with our partner My Climate.
The 3-layer jacket is made for purists, admiring functionality and features that are reduced to the necessary. The 3-way adjustable and helmet compatible hood is particularly valuable in storms. In a steep climb you will appreciate the generous armpit vents. The clever position of the armpit vents provides two more great benefits: First, the lower part of the side zipper allows for an easy access to the underlaying clothing and provides an ideal spot to warming up your hands. Secondly, the jacket can be easily converted into a vest. For this the side zippers need to be fully opened so the arms can slip through the ventilation slits. Afterwards the jacket sleeves can be fixed behind the neck for increased mobility. This is especially beneficial on ski tours in spring or during changeable weather conditions.
The used material is a durable and yet elastic 3-layer fabric developed by Sympatex. It provides the optimal freedom of movement and high breathability thanks to the High2Out-technology. Due to the extremely comfortable lining the jacket is suitable for wearing on bare skin.

Our jacket receives 31.9 out of 40 points for the performance in social sustainability. It is sewed in Switzerland and we only use logos, velcro fastener and rubber cords with the label MADE IN SWITZERLAND. The zipper for the pockets and the pit zips are either produced in Germany or Italy. The front zipper is made in Japan. The waterproof fabric is developed by the company Sympatex. However, the production takes place in Taiwan and is carried out by the companies Flying Tex and G-Fun. In Taiwan and Japan different terms of employment apply as in Switzerland. For example, it in Taiwan it is possible for an employer to dismiss an employee immediately.
But the job market is more flexible than here therefore the dismissed employee should get a new job rather quickly (approximately 4% unemployment). According to our research in Japan prevails a strict employee moral so that the government had to intervene to ensure a five-day week. In Taiwan also a five-day week is formalized. Additionally, a maximum of 46 hours of overtime per month was introduced last year. Taiwan as well as Japan play a pioneering role in the field of labour law in the Asian region. Therefore, it agrees with our conscience to produce in those countries. Nevertheless, the production in Asia causes a withdrawal of points in the environmental assessment. In the long term we want to improve this matter. Therefore we are always looking for alternatives in Western Europe.
The History of your Jacket
Find out what happens behind the scenes and get to know what is required to produce your jacket. Thanks to the fabric designers, chemists, weavers, tailors, quality inspection, packers and distributors who made this SWISS MADE and breathable rain jacket possible.
Woven, Dyed and Laminted in Taoyuan City
High-performance Fabric from Taiwan
The material used for the Tour Jacket is a slightly elastic, 3-layer fabric developed by Sympatex. The fabric is PFC-free as well as Bluesign and Ökotex certified. The production is rather complex and is done by specialists in Taiwan. As a first step the company Flying Tex weaves and dyes the durable outer material as well as the supple lining fabric. A few blocks away, the company G-Fun execute the task of laminating the three components (outer material, breathable and waterproof Sympatex-membrane and lining fabric) together.
We appreciate the collaboration with both companies. Together with Sympatex they pursue the highest environmental standards in the production. Therefore, the goal for the material is to meet the Greenpeace DETOX standard. In a first test run only 11 out of the 430 examined harmful chemicals could be detected.
A thorn in our side is the means of transport of the fabric to Switzerland. The batch is too small to be transported by ship. Therefore, we have no other choice than to ship it by plane. Until bigger batches will be ordered or else we find a local manufacturer, we compensate the emitted CO2. For this purpose, we cooperate with our partner MyClimate. The same fabric is used for the Freetour Pants.

Discover how your jacket is produced.
A lot of dedication and love is put into the development and production of our Tour Jacket. One take 71 separate parts made from high quality material, add precise handcraft and complete the task with a diligent quality control – finished is the master piece. In reality it is not as simple. The production of the Tour Jacket is rather complex. Here a short extract: The process of taping (sealing the seams) is a challenge for itself. The exactly right temperature, speed and roller pressure of the taping machine matters.
These parameters need to be controlled regularly and be adjusted if necessary. The tricky part about this step is that the tailor only has one attempt to place the tape on the right spot. If something goes wrong the mistake cannot be corrected. Additionally, the taping is the final step of the production therefore diligence and precision are demanded. Fortunately, the production team is highly trained and are consequently very accurate.
