Merino Shirt Women
100% organic merino wool knitted in Ermattingen (TG), dyed in Strengelbach (SO) and sewed to the final long-sleeved Shirt in Widnau (SG). The ROTAUF Underwear Shirt is characterized by the environmental friendly raw materials and as much SWISS-MADE as possible.
Over the last decade the merino wool experienced a justified revival. The pleasant-to-wear sensation, the climate regulating properties, the odour-free property and the ability of the wool to keep you warm even under moist conditions are the characteristics of this natural fibre. The long-sleeved shirt is ideal as a first layer for ski tours, alpine tours, hiking, leisurely bike riding or everyday life. The shirt isn’t suitable for high-intensity sports such as trail running, fitness or fast jogging because the wool in this fibre strength is quite warming.
Producing a Shirt in Switzerland is not difficult. Almost everyone who can handle a sewing machine can tackle this task. Producing over 800 pieces in 4 weeks time needs some light hands, know-how and a sophisticated organization. Therefore, we pay our diligent tailors a minimum monthly salary of 3800CHF. This is about 8 times the salary paid in China. The same applies to the fabric: the fabric is knitted and dyed 100% in Switzerland – not particularly cheap. Thus we renounce any intermediate trade elaborate marketing we can offer our merino shirt at a fair price.
In the environmental sustainability assessment the underwear shirt scores 49 out of possible 50 points. It is almost perfect regarding the following aspects:
1. No Harmful Chemicals 29.3
The merino fabric tested for over 430 harmful chemicals. Not a single one was detected. The analysis of the logos and washing labels is still pending.
2. Closed Loop (9.7/10)
Sheep’s wool is an extremely sustainable material, it regrows every year. We use for our clothing only 100% organic merino wool which is dyed without any harmful chemicals. This makes it possible to easily compost the shirt at the end of use, just open up the seams and remove the logo and label. So the cycle is closed.
For the ROTAUF Underwear Shirt transportation and package is kept to a minimum. Next to the necessary transport, the sheep’s farts burden the CO2-balance;). To get the 100%-neutral certificate, we compensate all unnecessary emissions with projects from MyClimate.
The tightly fitting ROTAUF underwear is made from fine, not itchy organic merino wool. Worn as first layer the shirt keeps you warm during cold winter days. The antimicrobial effect of the wool fibre prevent unpleasant odour. One of our expert alpine guides put the shirt to the test and wore it for a whole week. Even at the end of the week none of the guests had complained about an unpleasant odour. But the natural wool fibre isn’t superior to synthetic fibres in all respects. The natural fibre expands throughout wearing and returns to its original shape only after washing. Moreover, under moist conditions the tensile strength is reduced. Hence, particular caution must be taken when the shirt is put on or taken off. The same applies with regards to abrasion. Purely made from merino wool our fabric shows an extremely high abrasion resistance. Nevertheless, if frequently worn the life time won’t extend 1 to 2 seasons.
- Weight: 200g (men, size L)
- Material thickness: 150 g/m2
- Abrasion resistance fabric: >2’000 cycles – particularly high
- 100% organic merino wool from South America
In social sustainability rating the Underwear Shirt gets 33.8 out of possible 40 points. The used single-jersey fabric is 100% knitted and dyed in Switzerland. We receive the wool from South America. Due to supply shortages we buy in addition wool from Australia. Schoeller-Wool, which processes our wool, has strict contracts with their suppliers. Therefore, we are guaranteed to receive only mulesing-free, organic merino wool. The wool is finished in Hard at the Lake of Constance and spun in Kresice in Czech Republic. Afterwards the wool is shipped to Ermatingen to be knitted. Further information about the organic merino wool you find below! The washing labels and logos are as well produced in Switzerland.

From the Merino Sheep to the Finished Yarn
For the most part, the organic merino wool for our shirt comes from South America. A smaller part comes from Australia. The South American wool is washed and combed on-site close to the farms. Only then the wool is shipped to our partner Schoeller-Wool in Hard (close to the Swiss boarder). The Australian wool is firstly shipped to China to be washed and combed before being sent to the Schoeller-Wool site. We are not happy about this fact. We try to receive only South American wool for our clothing from Schoeller-Wool. Unfortunatly this is not easy to accomplish. Organic merino wool is extremely rare, only a few farmers around the globe comply with those strict guidelines. To prevent material shortages for our shirts we are obliged to buy Australian wool in addition. Arrived on the company site in Hard, the organic merino wool is finished in a complex process. This step is very important so that the shirt is machine washable and doesn’t need to be hand washed after use. Normally the finishing process uses a lot of chlorine, which is harmful for the employees as well as for the environment. This is for us a no-go. To our knowledge Schoeller-Wool is the only company which has the know-how of finishing without chlorine and undertakes all process steps in Europe.
After the finishing, the wool is shipped to Kresice in the Czech Republic near the Elb. There the wool is spun to a fine thread. Afterwards the product is transported to the Nägeli AG in Ermattingen for the knitting. At this point the wool has already travelled a long way. So the question can arise, is this still in terms with an organic product? Yes, it is organic. We don’t want that our sheep are prophylactically treated with antibiotics or to be feed with minor quality feed pellets and eventually slaughtered miles and miles away from the farm. Our organically kept sheep are only treated with antibiotics if an infection could be determined and only fed with grass. At the end of their life they are brought to slaughterhouses near the farm. Organic products are for the protection of animal welfare, so the location of the raw material production is secondary for us. The emitted CO2 from the transport is compensated to 100% with projects from our partner MyClimate. Unfortunately, there is no possibility to receive organic merino wool with the desired quality from farmers in Switzerland or Europe.

Sewed in Widnau
Discover how your Underwear Shirt is produced.
The production of the long sleeved shirts is compared to our other products relatively simple. About 15 minutes are needed to sew the separate parts together.
But here too precision is essential: the seam needs to be at the right place so no unpleasant itching is experienced or the seams open up again.
