We want to offer our jackets to a fair and competitive price. Hence, we renounce intermediate trade as well as expensive marketing. Moreover, we work together with our production team and athletes to find ways to reduce our production cost to a minimum without tampering with neither functionality nor performance. With this measure we could reduce the production cost for the hood and therefore safe 20 CHF during production process.
Last but not least, we have a tight financial structure. Half of our sales price is used for material and production. In average 5% are used for shipping. Stocking or rather pre-order discount takes another 4%. For the salary of Ursina and Remo, our internal developers, and for the production of patterns 8% are used. The last 15% are used to pay Tanja, Marion and Oliver for the customer service, sustainability work, sourcing and other remaining work for ROTAUF. The remaining 8% in the form of sales tax are our contribution to the Swiss public welfare ;).
29.5 out of 50 points - for a waterproof jacket a good performance.
1. No Harmful Chemicals (19.5/30)
The green fabric used in our Ultralight Jacket 2 is the first waterproof 3-layer fabric world wide which contains not any harmful chemical according to the Greenpeace DETOX standard. We congratulate Sympatex and their production in Taiwan for their excellent achievement. At the grey version, there is still a little bit of work to do: 2 problematic chemicals can still be detected. The zippers are due to lack of alternatives still treated with PFC. But the field is experiencing a change of thought and we hope to eliminate this shortcoming as soon as possible.
2. Closed Loop (0/10)
The light outer fabric, the soft nylon lining and the PES membrane are laminated together to a 3-layer fabric. This material mix allows for high functionality and maximal performance but makes it impossible to recycle. In order to offer a long-lasting and yet still light jacket we need to accept this compromise. As soon as some more durable, light and single origin alternatives are available we will switch to these materials.
3. CO2-neutral (10/10)
The ROTAUF Ultralight Jacket is worldwide the first rain jacket that is produced completely CO2-neutral.
This jacket is with its to the essential reduced but thought out features the perfect partner for every sports activities. The large pit zips provides you with a perfect climate even after a steep climb. Additionally, it has the proven ROTAUF-pocket technology: The thought out position of the zipper allows for quick access to the underlaying clothing. This feature is perfect to get quickly to your power bar or just to warm up your hands. The simplified, helmet-compatible hood is adjustable with just one movement. Thanks to the optimised position of the elastic band, shifting of the hood is impossible and guarantees custom fit. The used 3-layer fabric from Sympatex ensures optimal breathability as well as high tear and abrasion resistance thanks to the durable nylon fibres. With the smooth internal backing, a pleasant wearing comfort is achieved.

Woven, Dyed and Laminted in Taoyuan City
High-performance Fabric from Taiwan
The ultralight yet astonishingly durable 3-layer high-performance fabric is designed by specialists in Germany and produced by their partner in Taiwan. The company Flying Tex weaves and dyes the outer and the lining fabric. Thanks to their extensive experience, the latest looms and versatile know-how, the company from Taoyuan City is able to produce some of the lightest outer and lining fabrics worldwide. Only a few blocks away, those three components (outer fabric, waterproof Sympatex-membrane and lining) are glued together to a 89g/m2 heavy laminate. This process is also highly complex and requires a lot of know-how and an elaborate infrastructure. To the best of our knowledge, ther is no producer in Switzerland or Europe, which has the experience and the equipment to produce a fabric in the desired quality.
Also in terms of ecology the two companies are internationally leading. They show in a striking way that it is possible to produce in Asia on the highest of ecological standards. The green fabric didn’t test positive for any of the 430 harmful chemicals tested. Therefore the Ultralight fabric is the first breathable and waterproof fabric, which complies with the Green Peace DETOX-standard. The grey fabric already meets the Bluesign and the Ökotex certificate criteria. To fulfil the DETOX-standard, only two harmful chemicals must be eliminated. We are working on it…
Sewed in Widnau
Agile Fingers for a Lightweight Jacket
Together with our production team in Widnau and athletes we revised and optimised the features: This way, we can maximise performance with minimal production expenses. After an average of 2.4 hours, 2.4 meters of fabric, 14.7 meters of tape rubber cords, elastic bands, logos and quite a lot of thread your jacket is finished.
At first the material is cut and afterwards the pieces are sewed together. Then the zippers and cords need to be attached. Finally the seam sealing tape is stuck on. This step is rather delicate as it depends on the exactly right temperature, pressure and speed of the process. If one of the parameters is not quite right, it isn’t possible passing the jacket through the press roller without risking the irreversible clotting of the tape.Anmelden
