A sustainable fabric from Austria
From a modern weaving mill with a long history.
The Austrian weaving mill Getzner Textil AG from Bludenz is looking back on a history of more than 200 years. Today, the family business is one of the most modern weaving mills in the world. The company from neighboring Vorarlberg employs around 1,500 people and is one of the leading manufacturers of clothing damasks, fashion fabrics and technical textiles.
Getzner Textil has dedicated itself to paying particular attention to the environment in product development, in addition to customer benefits. The company complies with the highest chemical standards and pays attention to the most efficient use of energy and water. Numerous public buildings and the outdoor swimming pool near the headquarters are supplied with heat by the company's own district heating network.
In order to increase the environmental friendliness and recyclability of the fabric, we decided against a classic elastane blend fabric and in favor of a special fabric from Getzner consisting of two polyester components. The basis is a recycled polyester made from marine plastic. Elastic PBT fibers, which also belong to the polyester family, provide the necessary stretch. The fabric is therefore, in theory, completely recyclable.
Why do we speak of theoretical recyclability? Because in practice, apart from a few pilot projects, there is unfortunately still no fiber-to-fiber recycling for synthetic fibers due to a lack of suitable infrastructure. Even if our industry likes to suggest the opposite...
Why it is nevertheless important to develop recyclable products? To send a signal to the recycling industry that we are ready. Because the lack of fiber-to-fiber recycling infrastructure is not inexistent due to technical limitations, but because fiber-to-fiber recycling is economically still not attractive enough. The purer the materials used in outdoor products and the greater the quantity available, the more lucrative recycling becomes and the more likely the necessary investments will be made.
