Sorona - Bio-based high performance

When we think of outdoor clothing, we usually imagine robust, high-performance, and durable materials. But what if these qualities were combined with true sustainability? That's exactly what Sorona achieves, a partially bio-based fiber that combines high-tech with environmental awareness.

WHAT IS SORONA AND WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL?

If you know ROTAUF, you know we don't do things by halves. ROTAUF embraces sustainability through and through – and that means more than just using recycled materials or producing locally. It's about being smart when choosing fibers – and that's where Sorona comes in.

Sorona is a true innovation that combines sustainability and functionality. The fiber is partly made from corn sugar, a renewable raw material. This means fewer fossil fuels like petroleum are used in its production – a plus for the environment.

Another major advantage of Sorona is that less energy and water is used in its production than conventional polyester. This results in up to 63% fewer COâ‚‚ emissions. And best of all, the fiber is extremely durable, so clothing and other products made from Sorona last longer. This saves resources and protects the environment.

What you'll immediately notice when you hold Sorona in your hand is its softness. The fiber feels incredibly comfortable, is stretchy, hardly wrinkles, and retains its shape even after frequent washing. Furthermore, the colors in Sorona textiles are particularly vibrant and don't fade as quickly.

The possible uses are also enormous: You can find Sorona in outdoor and sportswear, leisurewear, and even home textiles like carpets. And when a product has reached the end of its lifespan? No problem – because Sorona is recyclable and fits perfectly into the cycle of sustainable materials.

With Sorona, you get a material that not only works great, but also feels good – because it puts less strain on our environment.

SORONA AND ROTAUF

ROTAUF is consistently moving forward in terms of sustainability. We rely on regional production in Switzerland and Europe, short, transparent supply chains, and environmentally friendly, high-quality materials. Sorona PES fits perfectly into our philosophy of sustainable outdoor clothing.

Imagine putting on a ROTAUF jacket that's functional and comfortable—and comes with the knowledge that it's made from a material that represents the future of modern, sustainable textile design. A jacket that protects you from wind and weather while using fewer resources in its production—and also lasts longer.

The outdoor world is faced with a dilemma: We love nature and want to protect it, but the very products that bring us outdoors often pollute the environment. With Sorona, we at ROTAUF show that there's another way – we can have highly functional clothing without having to compromise on sustainability.

With Sorona, we can design clothing that's just as impressive on the summit as it is in everyday life. And because its fiber is recyclable, the cycle remains closed.

AND HOW IS SORONA MADE?

The production of Sorona begins with a very simple raw material: corn sugar – from which the innovative fiber is later created.

It all starts with a biotechnological process: fermentation. The corn sugar is poured into huge tanks where microorganisms – similar to those used in beer or yogurt production – are at work. These little helpers consume the sugar and convert it into an important basic substance called 1,3-propanediol (PDO). It sounds complicated, but it's essentially a natural, chemical process that requires no petroleum at all.

The resulting PDO is then purified and sent to the next step: polymerization. This is where the magic happens—the PDO is combined with other components to create a new material: the Sorona polymer. This part of the process ensures that the fiber is so elastic, durable, and functional.

The finished polymer is then spun into fine fibers, which are later processed into fabrics. The range of products is broad: Sorona can be used for clothing, sportswear, and even carpets.

The bio-based origin isn't the only thing that makes Sorona so special. The environmentally friendly manufacturing process is another key component in the entire process chain. Less energy, lower CO₂ emissions, but full performance – that's exactly what makes this fiber so special.

Did you know?

A lot of toxic chemicals are hidden, especially in conventionally manufactured rain and outdoor jackets.

We use only PFAS-free materials for our collections to ensure that no harmful chemicals find their way into our clothing. With our Detox to Zero commitment, we go a step further and use a verification system that guarantees continuous improvement and environmental protection in textile production.

The Detox-to-Zero system helps us reduce pollutants in our production processes and implement environmentally friendly procedures. Annual reports on chemical use, waste treatment, and environmental protection measures ensure that we consistently adhere to transparent and sustainable practices.

We offer you environmentally friendly clothing – so you can have a clear conscience every time you wear it.
